Never date your best friend
Always be original
Sometimes rules are meant to be broken
Best friends Dave and Julia were determined to never be cliché high school kids—the ones who sit at the same lunch table every day, dissecting the drama from homeroom and plotting their campaigns for prom king and queen. They even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they'd never, ever do in high school.
Some of the rules have been easy to follow, like #5, never dye your hair a color of the rainbow, or #7, never hook up with a teacher. But Dave has a secret: he's broken rule #8, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It's either that or break rule #10, never date your best friend. Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember. Julia is beautiful, wild and impetuous. So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green. It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens: Dave and Julia discover that by skipping the clichés, they've actually been missing out on high school. And maybe even on love.
Is there anything worse than being in love with your best friend when they are oblivious to the fact?
Dave resigns himself to the fact that he and Julia will never be more than friends and when the Nevers give him the opportunity to expand his social circle and meet someone else, he makes the most of it. But when Julia starts to see him in a different light, things get more complicated than he could have imagined.
I loved this story. Reminiscent of films such as Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful, Adi Alsaid captures the pain of unrequited love in exquisite detail. I loved Dave. He's sweet and thoughtful and everything I'd have fallen in love with in high school. Julia I didn't like quite so much, but she's the character who has the biggest emotional journey to take.
Will the guy get the girl? Should the guy get the girl? You'll have to read to find out, and maybe you'll discover that being a cliché isn't the worst thing in the world after all.
My rating description would definitely trigger a hyperbole alert, but I don't care. I loved it.

Review
Dave and Julia have been best friends forever. Worried about becoming another pair of high school clichés, they create the Nevers - a list of things they will never do. Four years later, as graduation approaches, Dave stumbles across the list. To fight the end of school boredom, Dave and Julia decide it's time to do the Nevers and experience the things they've avoided for the past four years. As they work through the list, Dave starts to think that maybe they've had the wrong idea the whole time. After all, he's already broken one of the rules. Is there anything worse than being in love with your best friend when they are oblivious to the fact?

No, too busy with the drama in my home life.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds sad. Thanks for entering and good luck!
DeleteNope! I"m still in high school at the moment but I doubt is going to happen... :P
ReplyDeletePlenty of time yet :) Thanks for stopping by and good luck! :)
DeleteI was a huge nerd in high school, I think I was too in love with Mulder from the X-Files to have an unrequited love, the idea sounds romantic though! Thanks for the giveaway and I enjoyed reading your review ;-).
ReplyDeleteI was also a nerd but still had time for hopeless crushes on boys who just weren't interested. *wistful sigh* Good luck in the giveaway!
DeleteI've read quite a few books I've enjoyed lately. Troll Mountain by Matthew Reilly, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. My faves this year would have to be Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Pierce Brown's Red Rising. No unrequited love for me in high school back in the day...too busy reading!
ReplyDeleteThe Alchemist is one of my favourite books ever. Good luck! :)
DeleteYes and I married him!
ReplyDeleteGlad it wasn't unrequited! Good luck :)
DeleteHaha, nope, never had any crushes. ;-) Very excited for this book though and thanks for the giveaway and review!
ReplyDeleteCrushes on book characters count :) Good luck and thanks for stopping by :)
DeleteYes! I had the biggest crush on this guy in grade 7, but it wasn't meant to be because he ended up dating my best friend. And 5 years later, they're still together and happy as ever..
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That must have been pretty horrid at the time it happened. Good luck in the draw :)
DeleteOh, yeah. How I loved him. He's a family friend too, so I still see him from time to time and every single time it's like I'm that young again, remembering how I felt about him. Lol! It's cute and terrible all at once! ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I'm really looking forward to reading this book. And thanks for the giveaway!

It's so painful when you're in the midst of it, isn't it? Thanks for stopping by and good luck! :)
DeleteAlthough I have had many unrequited loves- I tend to develop a crush on any mildly charming guy, my most interesting one involves an eloquent guy studying quantum physics in college. His love for mushrooms and desire to question life steals my heart. Alas, he has yet to reciprocate or even dive into my pool of thought.
ReplyDeleteI relate to that so much! I hope you get both the guy and the book!
DeleteUnfortunately there is no love in my life. I have one year left of school and often see others falling at the feet of each other. Nope, only a bit of like going on, and for that, I will wait until, hopefully, something more progresses.
ReplyDeletePlus, boys in books are better!
DeleteNope haha I did have crushes but I was way too shy to approach them and let them know :3
ReplyDeleteMe too. Thanks for entering :)
DeleteI realised how to connect to guys in high school late, by simply saying Hi and talking to them. I was lucky to have a serious boyfriend in Year 12 though he was a few years older than me.
ReplyDeleteTreating them as people is generally the best way :)
DeleteAlas no high school crushes at all for me, let along unrequited love! This sounds great, lovely review Nicole! :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle @ The Unfinished Bookshelf
Thanks Michelle, and good luck in the draw!
DeleteNope, not had any crushes on anyone XD Fictional characters FTW. Also, this book sounds really cool. I mean the Never List?! I'm seriously considering reading this next. It's sounds really cute and fluffy <3 Also, thanks for the giveaway, Nicole!
ReplyDeleteIt is cute, but it has depth as well. Well worth adding to your reading list.
DeleteCrushes on book characters whilst in high school yes ! Crushes on real people, nah. However I act completely blind when someone has a crush on me, just don't need the attention right now ahaha.
ReplyDeletePriorities are important!
DeleteGosh so many! I always have EPIC crushes, and I fall in crush hard. Even at university it was the worst having the hugest crush but being paralysed and not being able to woo them with my nerdy charms. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I did have one in high school, but I was lucky to meet someone I really cared about at 16 (it didn't last, but it was great while it lasted).
ReplyDeleteGreat review - and thanks for the giveaway!
Went to a single-sex high school so that didn't happen for me
ReplyDeleteHmm, I had a big crush on a friend of my older brother for a few years. Oh and a MASSIVE one on Orlando Bloom. He was one of my very first celeb crushes. Haha. Looking forward to reading this one, I luuuuuuuuuurve friends-to-lovers romance
ReplyDelete- Rachel
