Heart.<br /> <br /> How much did I love this book? So much that I ignored my children and husband for an entire weekend so that I could spend more time with Alex and Henry.<br /> <br /> Alex is the son of the US' first female president, and as young, attractive, and political savvy as he is, he attracts a lot of media attention. When he causes an international incident at the Royal Wedding, measures are put in place to ensure that Alex and Henry, 3rd in line to the British throne, are seen to be friends, rather than the antagonists they are.<br /> <br /> As their friendship develops, Alex slowly realises that maybe he wants more. To get it, he'll need to get past his own beliefs about his sexuality, the eyes of the world's media, and centuries of tradition on both sides of the Atlantic.<br /> <br /> I absolutely adored the slow burn romance between them, along with the well developed supporting characters and the over arching political themes. If only the real 2016 election had gone the way this fictional one did.<br /> <br /> Featuring gay, trans and bi characters, happily blended families and characters with multiple backgrounds, this book presents a much more diverse (and well adjusted) White House than we are currently used to.<br /> <br /> The emails between Alex and Henry were adorable, especially when they started quoting famous lovers' correspondence to each other.<br /> <br /> The whole book is real and heartfelt and full of hope, and I absolutely loved it. They've been brought up in the last human settlement, learning the history of human civilisation, science, mechanics, engineering, farming. Everything they'll need to survive when their ageing parents and community are no longer around. </span></span><br /> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato;"><span style="font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></span> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato;"><span style="font-size: 13px;">I don't want to say too much about the plot, you absolutely want to read this without spoilers. The growth of the main characters, the development of their relationship,</span></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;"> and the journey they go on to save their community is so beautifully structured. </span><br /> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;">One of my favourite things about the book was at the start of each chapter, there is a record of what they have found while mudlarking, or just searching around their homes. My favourite was a fountain pen from the 1920s and a bic biro, both found down the back of an arm chair. I actually did laugh out loud at that one.</span><br /> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;">The ending managed to take me by surprise and the book really didn't go the way I expected it to. I also have questions about Lowrie's family name and exactly which branch of the family her ancestors were.</span><br /> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato; font-size: 13px;">Lauren James is amassing an impressive collection of original and different sci fi. Does he have what it takes to outwit the wily trickster god?</i><br /> <br /> <h4 style="text-align: left;"> Review:</h4> <br /> I read the Percy Jackson books years ago, and have had the first Magnus Chase book sitting on my shelf since it was released, but I only got to the series recently. I had forgotten how fun and entertaining Rick Riordan's writing is.<br /> <br /> This series focuses on Norse mythology, with Asgardian gods, Valkyries, and the noble residents of Valhalla fighting giants, rival gods and Loki to save the world.<br /> <br /> With more diversity than the Percy Jackson books, more readers will see themselves represented in the pages, which is always a good thing.<br /> <br /> Heaps of fun with high stakes and some beautifully emotional moments, the entire series is worth picking up. Themes include forgiveness, grief, identity, and family - those we inherit, and those we choose.<br /> <br /> This third instalment sees the heroes gearing up to face Loki and prevent Ragnarok. Again. While the focus is still on Magnus, we learn more about his friends, particularly the other residents of Floor 19 who've played minor roles thus far. Mallory, Halfblood and TJ all get their moment to shine, and we learn more about their backgrounds. Hearthstone and Blitzen are present, but not to the extent of previous books. This adventure takes place during Ramadan, so Samirah is helping save the world while fasting. There's a risk that the character will be a stereotype, or a list of symptoms, and also that carers will be portrayed as inspirational, or worse, a victim of their circumstances with a heavy burden.<br> <br> Maddy's sister Bee has multiple disabilities, including autism. She also has severe epilepsy and so can't be left alone. Maddy and her mother care for Bee between them. She's not portrayed as a burden to them, and Maddy loves her dearly, but it can't be denied that Bee's needs have an impact on Maddy's life.<br> <br> Albert is happy working at the local stables, but doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, other than get out of town and away from his father and brother. Albert has been stepped on and put down his entire life, and the only place he feels happy is at the beach.<br> <br> Maddy and Albert meet at the stables and he's instantly taken with her. She takes a little longer to warm up, but a genuine friendship develops between the two. Tension develops when Albert reveals his plans to leave town. Maddy knows she could never leave Bee, so how could the two of them have a future together?<br> <br> </div>

It was the third book of the Risen Sun trilogy, and the sixth instalment in a series now known as The Cymrian Saga. The Risen Sun had told a story which followed on from the events of The Fallen Moon, and featured many of the same characters, but in many ways it was its own creature, and Shadow’s Heart did indeed mark the ending of the story of Laela Taranisäii, the tough young woman who we first met in The Shadow’s Heir.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> Even so, not everything was resolved. As the last book ended Laela’s traitorous brother Kullervo was still alive, but now living in self-imposed exile as the guardian of her child. Meanwhile her cousin Caedmon had successfully seized her throne and been crowned King, and immediately declared war on the South.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> And there were two other characters whose stories had only just begun. During his travels in the South, Kullervo had met and befriended a orphaned boy known only as Red, and both of them witnessed the hatching of Kraego, son of Skandar. Neither character played a particularly large role in the story, and yet they were important, because I knew it would be up to them to carry the next book.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> I introduced Red to the series for a few reasons. One was that so far the series had mostly been focused on the North and its people, and all the major protagonists had been Northerners, or at least half Northerner in the case of Laela and Kullervo. For the third trilogy, it was time to truly explore the South, and see it through the eyes of a Southerner. Up until now the people of the South had been “the enemy”, and only a scarce handful of them were friendly. But this wasn’t because they were a “bad” or “evil” race; they simply lived according to the prejudices they’d grown up with, as we all do. The vast majority of Southerners are perfectly decent, honest people who are fiercely loyal to their friends and families. I wanted to show this side of them, and show, too, that Southern commoners like Red are just as frightened of their enemies to the North as the Northerners are of them. It’s all very well to sympathise with a ruler who attacks a foreign power to protect his lands and people from them, but what about the innocents who are caught in the middle of it?</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> The other reason I brought him into the picture was more personal in a way – I really liked the character of Captain Bran Redguard, who appeared in the first four books, and regretted not having given him a larger role. But then I thought “maybe there are other Redguards out there”. It came in very handy that in the first book Bran mentioned in passing that his sister had recently married, and so I decided that she had a son. And that son was Red.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> The other character was of course Kraego. Arenadd’s tortured spirit believed he had won his secret struggle against the Night God when Skandar refused to obey her wishes any further, but the hatching of Kraego showed him he was very wrong. A new dark griffin, poised perhaps to create a new Shadow That Walks and so begin the nightmare Arenadd tried to thwart all over again – hence Arenadd’s horror and panic when he first saw the youngster.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> Kraego is in some ways like his father – he’s stubborn, willful and brutally aggressive. But in other ways he takes after his mother Senneck – certainly, he’s unusually intelligent for a griffin. He also shares his mother’s ruthless ambition. Kaego is not one to take orders, and he has no loyalty toward anyone but himself… and one other person: a certain Southerner boy who cared for and played with him when he was a chick. How has your love of popular culture, and movies in particular, influenced your writing?</b><br /> <b><br /></b> My love of pop culture - and movies - informs everything I write. Whether that’s news articles, commentary pieces or novels, the kind of pop culture I consumed growing up was how I related to the world. I think that’s true for a lot of nerdy kids and it was definitely the case with me. Naturally the things I grew up with and the things that have shaped me as a person bleed into my work. Thankfully, a lot of my readers are just as geeky as I am and usually understand the inspirations and motivations behind my stories.<br /> <br /> <b>Tommi Grayson, from your <i>Who's Afraid?</i> series is a kick-ass, take no prisoners type of girl. How does Kaia Craig compare?</b><br /> <b><br /></b> Kaia and Tommi are very different. They’re both kick-ass, but in different ways. For instance, Tommi often dives into situations by thinking with her heart, rather than her head. Kaia is a lot quieter and more reserved. Tommi literally has superpowers, whereas Kaia’s special abilities are her kindness, her compassion and her endurance. I love reading stories that feature diverse kinds of women with a range of strengths and weaknesses, so I always try and write something that’s different from what I’ve done previously.<br /> <b><br /></b> <b>What can we expect from <i>It Came From the Deep</i>? </b><br /> <b><br /></b> It’s my first young adult novel, so the characters are a lot younger than those at the centre of the <i>Who’s Afraid?</i> series. In the <i>Who’s Afraid?</i> books everyone is an adult, whereas in <i>It Came From The Deep</i> many of them are still trying to work out what being an adult even means. The issues they’re dealing with are also very different. Kaia Craig, in particular, has just graduated high school and is working through that transition period when you’re deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life and how you can get there.<br /> <br /> <b>Do you have a soundtrack for your writing? Were there any songs in particular that influenced or inspired you while writing this book?</b><br /> <b><br /></b> Oh definitely, music is a big part of my writing process. I need it on in the background when I work, but I also think about specific bands or songs that different characters would listen to that shape who they are as people and often what they’re going through. Any advice for those doing NaNo this year?</b><br /> <b><br /></b> It was! It Came From The Deep was the book I wrote the first time I did NaNoWriMo several years ago. As for advice for those doing it this year, the most important thing is just to get through the month and make it to the end. To pump out that word count, you need to keep smashing out the story and not waste time going over and over what you already have down. That’s not the way I’d usually write - it’s not the way most people write, as proofing during the process is rather an essential part - but NaNoWriMo isn’t normal so there’s a lot of ‘regular’ writing habits and instincts you have to put to the side to make it.
